Forum: GratefulDead Subject: I guess it doesn't matter anyway

Well as usual I have no idea what is going on around here but I wanted to invite Gentle Jack Jones(great handle) to participate in the music appreciation part of our forum .

Here's my Question to the GD forum-
early show on 01.03.70 opens with a nice Morning Dew what is your favorite opener.

Mine
1st set> Jack Straw or Cold Rain
2nd set> Samson or Scarlet

You can get real specific if you want as far as an exact date and song but I chose not to.

I can only think of one right now, but Shakedown (Utica 3/13/80) is nice. Always love a hot Jack Straw to get things off on the right foot, though.

Yeah, I just think that Jack Straw always required a collective effort.
I much prefered Shakedown to be in the second set I liked to be fully primed for that one!

99 times out of a hunderd I couldn't agree more, but when it's the quality of the Utica show, I'll be more than happy to get primed a little early.

I know what your saying some nights the energy coming in is so intense that the Band just has to pull out one of the big guns. I always loved the way the Dead could pick up on the vibe!
There were some nights with the Security, the Rain or Snow or just general life hassles that it was everything just to get inside and the band would play a smokin opener and just make it all worth while.

This probably goes into a favorite tune category but I really love the Half Step anywhere, anytime. I caught it one night at the Byrne as an opener and they sent it into I Know you rider that was bizarre and if memory serves me right it was a night were security lost control and the place was stuffed to the rafters. I knew it was going to be an interesting night with a
HALF STEP>RIDER opener

I bet Dew as an opener got pretty rare after the early 70's , too lazy to check Deadbase.

Just to show I can be light hearted and musical as well as an old cynic:

set one: Bertha
set two: Playin'in the Band

Both classics can anyone complain about a Bertha opener it is like Aerobics for Deadheads.
A Playing second set opener Wow you know the boys are going to render something tasty.

I have a good one went to a Garden show and the boys opened the Second Set with Not Fade... I thought that was pretty cool
and if memory serves me right they made a NFA sandwich out of it to close the night.

If you are referring to NFA>Scarlet>Fire at MSG 88 I was there as well. To the guy who said bertha to open, it would be next in line for me. The NYE 87 version is atomic

Man, I got into the little area where they have the T.V. Camera when there is a Sporting event at MSG which is a perfect place to view a show and I somehow got to spend the whole show there it was like i was invisible.

Great thread Chris!

E 72 is full of great openers.

4-8 Bertha - Listen to Jerry's vocals. He's keyed up!!
5-11 Playin! - Fasten safety belts
4-17 Cold Rain

Second Sets = Truckin - You just knew a TOO or a DS were right around the bend.

Set 1: Music Never Stopped (favorite opener I ever saw was MNS>Sugaree>MNS)

Set 2: That's a toughie, but I'd have to go with Scarlet>Fire. It let you know they had a little time during the intermission to relax, regroup, and gear up to step on stage and really explore some possibilities. And while it might go without saying, that pairing of songs enabled them to pull off the tried and true Grateful Dead gimmick of bringing a long musical statement full circle to a theme they had already played a long, strange trip earlier in the set, or even the show as a whole, in this case the final coda of Scarlet Begonias. I don't know of any other band that did that sort of thing as a standard part of their presentation, but if there was (or is), they probably didn't (don't) pull it off as slick as the Dead.

Feel like a Stranger definitely! You were always in for a good treat when they opened either set with that.

You "know" it's gonna get stranger so let's get on with the show.

Every show with a FLAS opening was on fire.

Good call with the FLAS, But will stick with Shakedown anytime anywhere except it has to be before 1982.........there I go again backpeddling.

the older heads in my neighborhood use to refer to Shakedown as the Disco Song (they were pre-71 only) . I always loved a good Shakedown!

The funny thing that sprang from that was the Disco Ball crowd
which I am pretty sure was not a cult but was lots of fun to party at Rainbow Gatherings with those folks.

Dancin' In The Streets was played many, many times BEFORE '77 and is the original GD disco cover. IMO.

If you haven't heard it yet, the Utica 3*13*1 Shakedown opener is absolutely gorgeous and the rest of the show is exceptional as well. If you like a hot Shake opener, give it a listen, you can't go wrong.

I always like the Alabama>Promised Land openers. That is a nice extended rocker & sets a nice pace for the show.

first set: Jack Straw or a pre 95 Alabama Getaway
second set: Shakedown. The sound check and potential audio problems were usually fixed by then, especially if it was a first night in a city.

I never seemed to catch Alabama Getaway it got pretty rare. You know I think the Dead played Alabama on Saturday Night Live once.
